Perhaps the most well know form of on-line advertising is through Google Adwords. Google Adwords is the program where ads show up when the users do Google searches. These are the ads that show up in the coloured box above the search results, and to the right of these same results.

The main results for your Google search are the "organic rankings." You cannot buy your position in the Organic rankings. The Adwords, however are advertising spots, related to the words searched by the user. There are several factors which determine how high up your ad will appear in the Adwords list:

  • relevancy of your site to the key words typed by the user
  • bid you've entered for these key words
  • quality of the competition for these same words
  • location-specific parameters
  • demographics you've entered in Adwords setup

When managed properly, Google Adwords can be an extremely effective advertising tool. Account managers have the ability to focus on very key parameters so that the users that click on their ads have a good chance to buy / call / complete a desired action on your site. Some of the Factors that can be controlled, are location, time of day, age / gender, and budget (daily and for each set of words).

Feedback for a Google Adwords account can determine very quickly if you as the client is making or losing money. This is done through the use of a "conversion code". A conversion code is a small bit of programming that tells Google when a certain page has been visited as a result of clicking on your ad. By assigning a value of a "conversion", it is easy to determine the cost per conversion, and therefore feedback on the effectiveness of the Google Adwords.

A Facebook Ad Campaign can be a very effective way to advertise your product or service. Facebook users spend much longer on a page than someone doing a Google search. The strength of a Facebook Ad is that it targets more of a Facebook account holder's interests. For instance, if you are selling golf products, you would target people who's interests / hobbies included golf.

A Facebook ad appears on the Right side of the Facebook page. You can't get away from these ads - they are always there (which is good for Facebook Advertisers). Positioning of your ad on Facebook is somewhat similar to that of Google - it is based on bid, however, the landing page quality is not a variable in determining how often / positioning of your ad. Facebook Ads currently will get you many more "impressions" (number of times your ad shows on the page), but the percentage of actual clicks and the conversions will be lower than Google.
